Living in Buffalo, NY: 8 Things You’ll Love About Calling This City Home

October 30, 2025 by mpetrie Leave a Comment

If you’re thinking about moving to Buffalo, NY, you’re not alone. Known as the “City of Good Neighbors,” Buffalo has been gaining attention for its affordable lifestyle, strong job market, and warm community spirit. Whether you’re relocating for work, school, or simply craving a change of pace, this thriving Western New York city offers everything from stunning architecture to a growing food scene and easy access to outdoor adventures.

I moved here after I met my husband and it was the best decision! I have become part of a community that I love and has given me a life I didn’t know I wanted.

Here are 8 things you’ll absolutely love about living in Buffalo, NY and why I love them too!

1. Affordable Cost of Living

One of the biggest perks of living in Buffalo is how far your dollar goes. The city’s cost of living is significantly lower than the national average, especially when it comes to housing. Whether you’re buying your first home or upgrading to a larger property, Buffalo offers exceptional value compared to other major cities in the Northeast.

Fun Fact: Buffalo ranks among the top affordable housing markets in the United States, according to U.S. News and World Report.

2. Beautiful and Historic Architecture

Buffalo is a city filled with character and charm. You’ll find stunning historic homes, Frank Lloyd Wright-designed buildings, and well-preserved neighborhoods like Elmwood Village and Allentown. Many Buffalonians take pride in restoring and maintaining the city’s architectural heritage, giving each street a unique and timeless look.

3. A Foodie’s Paradise

From the world-famous Buffalo wings to upscale dining and locally-owned cafés (follow me on instagram to find my favorites!), the city’s culinary scene is booming. Buffalo’s restaurant community celebrates both tradition and innovation. You’ll find everything from comfort food to global cuisines. I have a whole series on the best wings in Buffalo from Elmo’s in the Northtowns to Adolf’s in the city and Barbill in the Southtowns! (Yes, Buffalo is divided into Northtowns and Southtowns and man, are Buffalonians loyal to it!)

4. Thriving Arts and Culture Scene

Buffalo offers an impressive array of museums, theaters, and galleries. The Albright-Knox Art Gallery (now the Buffalo AKG Art Museum), Shea’s Performing Arts Center, and Burchfield Penney Art Center are just a few cultural gems. Throughout the year, locals enjoy festivals, music events, and community celebrations that showcase Buffalo’s artistic energy.

5. Access to Nature and the Great Outdoors

Buffalo is perfectly positioned for outdoor enthusiasts. With Lake Erie, Niagara Falls, and numerous parks just a short drive away, there’s always something to explore. Residents enjoy kayaking, biking, and hiking in the summer and skiing or snowboarding in the winter. The Buffalo Waterfront and Canalside have become popular spots for relaxation and family fun. Canalside has really been built out over the last few years and it is actually where we spent Mother’s Day this year in the sun, enjoying a few drinks and snacks along the water while kids played games and rode on the merry-go-round!

6. Strong Sense of Community

True to its nickname, Buffalo lives up to being the “City of Good Neighbors.” Residents are known for their friendliness and willingness to help others. You’ll quickly feel at home here, thanks to the city’s welcoming atmosphere and community-driven events that bring people together all year long.

7. Sports and Local Pride

If you love sports, you’ll fit right in. Buffalonians are passionate about their teams, especially the Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres and The Bandits- the world’s best lacrosse team! Game days are a citywide celebration filled with energy, loyalty, and plenty of tailgating. It truly is a way of life here and a Monday attitude is determined on what happened in football the day before.

Beyond the professional sports, Buffalo has a ton of sports available to adults as well (kids obviously through school and travel leagues). GameOn Sports and Topper are just 2 of my favorites as they offer co-ed 2 hand touch football, softball, volleyball, pickleball, broomball and so much more. They range from competitive to beer league and extremely relaxed. Whatever you want they have! My husband and I are very active in the sports world and have met some of our closest friends through these activities!

8. Year-Round Festivals and Events

Buffalo knows how to celebrate. From Taste of Buffalo and Wing Fest to Canal Fest and Garden Walk Buffalo, there’s always something happening. The city embraces every season, offering ice skating in winter, food and music festivals in summer, and colorful fall markets.

Conclusion

Living in Buffalo, NY means being part of a city that combines affordability, culture, and community spirit. Whether you’re drawn by the beautiful homes, exciting events, or the friendly people, Buffalo has something for everyone.

Not being from Buffalo originally, this place has welcomed me with open arms and I love that I get to help others call this place home!
